Overwatch 2 Ditches Another Game Mode as It Slowly Sheds What Made It a Sequel

Overwatch 2 was introduced with a promise of new modes, seasonal cycles, and a revamped monetization strategy through battle passes and an overhauled cosmetics shop. While some of these pillars remain, the game has seen many of its new modes discarded over the past year and a half. The latest mode to be removed is the Hero Mastery Gauntlet, continuing a trend that has left fans questioning what differentiates Overwatch 2 from its predecessor.

Hero Mastery Gauntlet: The Latest Casualty

Hero Mastery Gauntlet was a cooperative spin on the Hero Mastery mode, added in September 2023. Unlike its single-hero obstacle course counterpart, this mode had teams of three defending towers against waves of enemies, aiming for high scores. Despite its potential, it didn't resonate with players and will be discontinued in Season 11.

"As we prepare for Season 11, we’ve taken the time to evaluate a variety of game modes based on how much they are being played. Hero Mastery Gauntlet was intended to bring the high score-chasing excitement of Hero Mastery missions into a multiplayer format. Unfortunately, it hasn’t resonated with players in the ways that we hoped." - Blizzard's official statement

Players have until the end of Season 10 to complete the Lifetime Challenges for Hero Mastery Gauntlet and compete on the mode’s Top 500 leaderboards.

Shifting Focus: What Remains and What's Next

The base Hero Mastery mode, which offers hero-specific obstacle courses, will continue, with more courses planned for future seasons. This mode has been a staple since its introduction, allowing players to refine their skills with individual heroes.

Upcoming Changes to Heroes

Blizzard has also teased changes to several heroes, with some updates arriving as soon as Season 11 and others potentially coming later:

  • Cassidy: His controversial Magnetic Grenade will change to a short-ranged hindering explosive in Season 11.
  • Reaper: Major rework to Shadow Step and other buffs that do not enhance his tank-busting abilities.
  • Roadhog: Nerfs to Take a Breather and Whole Hog, effective May 24.

Possible Future Adjustments

  • Lifeweaver: Changes to reduce friction between his healing and damage capabilities and add incentives for allies on his Petal Platform.
  • Mercy: Potential buffs focused on enhancing her mobility.
  • Symmetra: Improvements to her frontline presence, possibly through increased survivability or beam damage.
  • Hanzo: Indirect buffs via health pool adjustments for evasive and high-damage heroes to put them within his one-shot range.

The Ongoing Evolution of Overwatch 2

The removal of Hero Mastery Gauntlet is just one of many changes Overwatch 2 has undergone. The game has faced criticism for cutting content initially promised as part of its PvE suite, including skill trees and hero missions. The story mode has also reportedly been scrapped after just three missions.

Despite these setbacks, Blizzard continues to tweak and refine Overwatch 2, aiming to balance hero abilities and improve gameplay. The community remains hopeful that future updates will bring more stability and excitement to the game.

Looking Forward

Overwatch 2's next season begins on June 18, and while Hero Mastery Gauntlet's removal might not be the most significant loss, it adds to the narrative that Overwatch 2 is struggling to justify its status as a sequel. As Blizzard continues to adjust and adapt, players are eager to see how the game will evolve and what new content will be introduced to keep the Overwatch experience fresh and engaging.
